The Roman Walks
immerse yourself in the atmosphere of everyday Roman life
On the doorstep
The circular route starts right at the car park of the Petronell-Carnuntum visitor centre. The walk first leads to the amphitheatre of the civilian town. Here you can sense the atmosphere of the days when up to 12,000 spectators cheered on the gladiators. From the amphitheatre the path continues to the next Roman showpiece just a few hundred metres away: the Heidentor, Austria's best-known Roman monument and the emblem of the region.
Through the streets of Petronell-Carnuntum you reach the main square with its Trinity Column. From here a path branches off to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. The route ends at the palace and passes the Roman quarter on the way back to the visitor centre.
The original splendour of the Roman city has been digitally reconstructed; information boards along the paths explain what stood where. Two of these sites are the auxiliary fort and the legionary camp with the amphitheatre of the military town, on the way to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
The treasure map is available at Römerstadt Carnuntum, Hauptstraße 1a, and at the regional office of Donau Niederösterreich Tourismus at Hauptstraße 3 in Petronell. Ten boards along the route each pose a small riddle; together the answers spell out a solution word.
